Reaction to and reflection on The Living or the Dead, by Mary McCluskey.

Mary McCluskey is a UK journalist with a base in Los Angeles and a home in Stratford upon Avon. Her short stories have been published in literary magazines in the UK, US, Australia and Hong Kong and have been read on BBC Radio 4. She has just completed a novel, which is now in the hands of an agent.

Mary, this is so witty, funny and yet very emotional truthful and quite a cliff-hanger too. I couldn't put it down.

I admire the subtlety of this story. It feels uncluttered, pared down, and yet the characters are whole and rounded and it's a moving read. Great dialogue too!
